Sight words are a very important part of the learning to read process. As soon as your child starts school (or earlier), they are presented with words that they need to learn to recognize. As a parent, you need ways that you can help your child learn. Sight word activities that you can do at home are a great resource.

What Are Sight Words?
When you see the term “sight words” in an activity, it could mean a few different things.
- Traditionally, sight words are words that do not follow the traditional rules of phonics and spelling. Children are taught to memorize them by sight.
- High frequency words are words that children encounter very often in their reading. These words may or may not follow the traditional rules of phonics and spelling.
- Sometimes vocabulary words associated with a topic, such as spring or the farm, are labeled as sight words and treated as such.
Why Are Sight Word Activities Important?
Mastering sight words is not the only component of learning to read, but it is very important.
Phonics Doesn’t Help With Some Words
While learning phonics helps children to sound out words, not all words can be “sounded out” very easily, if at all. Some examples would be words such as you, two, and one. In order to read those words, children need to recognize them.
High-Frequency Words Are Everywhere
Only 300 words in the massive English language make up about 65% of all written material. If children learn to recognize those words on sight, reading will be so much easier for them.
